When Nina Davuluri, crowned Miss America in September, came to Central York High School in York, Pennsylvania to give a speech, she probably didn’t plan on coming back for this year's prom. High-school senior Patrick Farves had a different plan.

During a speech about the importance of diversity and STEM studies, the 18-year-old stood up to invite Ms. Davuluri to the prom and handed her a plastic flower. Unfortunately for him, she laughed it off and continued her speech.

Perhaps it would have gone better with a dozen real flowers, but at least he didn’t take the more common YouTube or Twitter route like many of his predecessors who bravely asked celebrities to proms and formal gatherings over the years.

Even worse for Farves, Central York High gave him a three-day in-school suspension for the stunt. That’s right, he didn’t even get the much more fun out-of-school suspension.

According to the Associated Press, the school’s administration got wind of his plans for Davuluri and warned him not to go through with it, but he wouldn’t be deterred. The school released a statement about Farves’s suspension:

"It is not our practice to discipline a student for asking someone - even Miss America - to a school dance," it said. "However, it is our practice to set expectations for student behavior, to communicate those expectations and rules to students and families and to ensure those rules are followed within our schools."

In a video posted the York Daily Record, Farves admits he understands why the administration wasn’t too happy about the stunt, which apparently isn’t his first. Last year he asked Rohan Murphy, a wrestler and motivational speaker, if he could take a selfie with him during his speech.

In typical high-school fashion, the student body is standing behind Farves and defying the school. Farves received two ovations for asking Davuluri to the prom and the local Twitter scene has exploded with support:
