The San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens will face off on Feb. 3 in New Orleans at Super Bowl XLVII. Both teams won their respective championship games on Sunday, and brothers Jim and John Harbaugh will battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy
According to most sportsbooks, San Francisco is expected to win the title. The point spread at most Las Vegas Casinos has the 49ers as four-point favorites.
San Francisco had a better regular season than Baltimore, going 11-4-1. They’ve beaten the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers in their playoff run.
The Ravens went 10-6 in the regular season, losing three of their last four games. However, they have heated up in the postseason, winning three games by an average of 11 points each.
En route to Super Bowl 47, Baltimore defeated some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, including Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Just like when they face San Francisco, Baltimore was expected to lose each of their last two games. They were more than a touchdown underdog in their contests against both the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots.
The betting line is smaller than the average point spread for recent Super Bowls. In the past 10 years, the underdog has been given an average of 5.35 points. The favorite has won six of the last 10 Super Bowls, but only covered three of those times.
Neither team has won a championship in the past decade. Baltimore beat the New York Giants in the 2001 Super Bowl, with Ray Lewis earning MVP honors. The 49ers are tied for second all-time with five championships, but they haven’t won it all since 1995 when they defeated the San Diego Chargers.
It’s the first Super Bowl appearance for both quarterbacks. Joe Flacco has finally made it to the title game after playing in 12 career playoff games. Colin Kaepernick had never played in the postseason before this year.
