What’s a St. Patrick’s Day dinner without some Irish Soda Bread? After you decide on which easy way you’ll make your corned beef and cabbage this holiday, delve into our super easy recipe for everyone’s favorite side dish.

To make this sweet treat, you’ll need:

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 1 electric mixer
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 loaf pan

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour (with additional for kneading)
  • 1 3/4 cup of buttermilk (cold)
  • 1/2 stick of unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of raisins (optional)

Additionally you’ll need a little over one hour of your time and, if desired, some extra butter for serving (though we recommend salted butter.)

Recipe:

  • Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take your loaf pan and spray it with either butter or vegetable spray (we recommend butter). While the oven is heating up, start making your mixture.
  • Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, raisins and butter in a mixing bowl. Use an electric mixer to combine the ingredients.
  • In a measuring cup combine the cracked egg and buttermilk. Use a fork to mix the ingredients together. Then, very slowly with electric mixer, add the liquids into the dry ingredients. Don’t be alarmed if the mixture looks too wet.
  • When you have a good consistency for the dough, put into onto a floured cutting board and knead it into a loaf shape. Place the loaf into your pan.
  • If you want to, you can make an “X” shape into the top of the dough with a knife. You can also brush some additional butter on the top of the loaf to give it a nicer finished look.
  • Your Irish Soda Bread should bake anywhere from 40-60 minutes. If you want to know if your loaf is done, place a piece of dry spaghetti into the center of it. If the piece comes out dry, your loaf is done. If it’s wet, it needs more time in the oven.
  • Allow the Irish Soda Bread to cool for roughly 10 minutes before slicing. It should be served as a room temperature.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
