Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie’s (Floriana Lima) story arc in tonight’s episode of “Supergirl” will make their relationship stronger than ever.

In “Inside Supergirl” featurette for Season 2, episode 13, co-executive producer Jessica Queller explained why Alex and Maggie’s arc in the episode is a significant development in the couple’s romance.

“This is an important episode in their relationship because we learn the real backstory of how Maggie was outed to her parents,” Queller said.

In Season 2, episode 6, Maggie convinced Alex to come out to her family, and in the process, she revealed how her dad and mom took her coming out. “My dad isn’t exactly known for his open-mindedness, but he was pretty good. And, so was my mom,” the police detective told the DEO agent in the episode.

But before tonight’s episode reveals Maggie’s real coming-out story, it seems that the couple will first find themselves at odds with each other regarding whether or not they should celebrate Valentine’s Day.

As previously reported, Alex is beyond excited to spend her first Valentine’s Day with a girlfriend. But Maggie is not keen on the holiday. As a matter of fact, she even tells Alex in the trailer for the episode that Valentine’s Day makes her “want to puke.” Ultimately, their opposing views on the holiday lead to their first real fight as a couple. But to make it up to Alex, Maggie recreates a very special night.

In addition to Maggie’s real coming-out story, fans will also learn more about the police detective outside of her relationship with Alex in upcoming episodes of the season. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that there’s actually an upcoming storyline that focuses on Maggie as a member of National City Police Department. “There’s a storyline coming up where it’s not really about Alex and Maggie’s relationship,” Kreisberg said. “It’s more about Maggie as a cop getting caught up in an art heist.”

“Supergirl’ Season 2, episode 13, titled “Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk,” airs on Monday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
