It looks like Kara (Melissa Benoist) will be dealing with Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) loss the wrong way in Season 3 of CW’s “Supergirl.”

During a roundtable interview at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, executive producer Robert Rovner said that Kara is grappling with Mon-El’s loss when the new season begins. But as she tries her best to get over with what happened at the end of last season, it seems that the Girl of Steel is coping with the problem in a self-destructing way.

“In Season 2 she was struggling with can she have it all. In Season 3, she’s really struggling with how does she compartmentalize being a superhero with those human feelings that are uncomfortable for her. So she ends up throwing herself more into [life as Supergirl] which complicates a lot of Kara’s relationships,” Rovner said (via Hidden Remote).

In the Season 3 trailer, Kara appears to be blaming herself for the sacrifice Mon-El made at the end of the Season 2 finale. “I tried to be a human but I’m not. Kara Danvers was a mistake,” Kara, who is clearly being too hard on herself, says in the promo clip.

In the Season 2 finale, Supergirl and the DEO saved the Earth from the looming Daxamite invasion by dispensing low levels of lead into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, the move made the planet uninhabitable for all Daxamites including Mon-El. So before the lead could kill him, Mon-El was forced to jump in his pod and escape Earth, leaving Kara behind.

While Mon-El’s current location is being kept under wraps, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg did say (via TV Insider) that “astute comic book fans may have a semi-good guess as to where Mon-El went.”

Wood was also tight-lipped about what’s in store for his character in Season 3, but the actor said (via Hidden Remote) that when viewers “do find out what actually happened to Mon-El, where he ends up going and what happens next, it’s going to be pretty satisfying.”

“I think it brings some really exciting new areas to the show; I think the fans will be really excited,” Wood added.

“Supergirl” Season 3 premieres on Monday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
