“Supergirl” Season 2 finale could be the greatest episode of the CW series’ sophomore run.

In a recent interview with TVLine, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Cat Grant’s (Calista Flockhart) return to National City makes the season finale extra special. “With the return of Superman and Cat Grant we are poised for our biggest most exciting episode of the season,” Kreisberg said. “Big fights, big guest stars, big emotion — it’s going to be amazing.”

Hoechlin made his debut as the Man of Steel in “Supergirl” Season 2 premiere, where he helped his cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) save Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) from an assassination attempt. He stuck around for Season 2, episode 2, where he fought the classic Superman villain, Metallo (Frederick Schmidt).

Like Superman, a.k.a. Clark Kent, Cat was also last seen in Season 2, episode 2. In that episode, she decided to take a leave of absence from CatCo Worldwide Media to find better things to accomplish after she felt stagnant in the world of media she already dominated. Before she left CatCo, Cat promoted James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) to be her stand-in while she’s away.

In February, Kreisberg also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the content of the box — which Lillian Luthor (Brenda Strong) found among Lex Luthor’s weapons in the Cadmus bunker in Season 1, episode 12 — will be revealed.

In addition to Lillian and Cadmus, Kara also has to deal with Rhea (Teri Hatcher) and the Daxamites before the season ends. And during a separate chat with Entertainment Weekly, Benoist implied that her character might ultimately team up with one of her enemies to take down the more evil one in the Season 2 finale. “She’s going to have to figure out how to balance it all,” Benoist said of Kara. “There might be people she has to ally with and people who will be her clear enemies, so it’s a lot of juggling.”

“Supergirl” Season 2 finale (episode 22) is slated to air on Monday, May 22 at 8 p.m. EDT.
