Katie McGrath as Lena

Although Lena is the only character in Kara’s inner circle who still doesn’t know about her superhero alter ego, “Supergirl” star Katie McGrath prefers that it stays that way.

“I think it’s important for Kara (Melissa Benoist) to have someone she doesn’t have to be Supergirl with,” McGrath told TVLine. “If Lena (McGrath) knew the truth, she’d always be Supergirl. And she needs to be Kara. That’s what this whole season is about, her struggling with her humanity. She has to be solely that person for somebody, and if that person has to be me, it makes me feel special.”

When asked how she thinks Lena would react if she learned that Kara and Supergirl are one, McGrath said that she thinks her character would feel a little betrayed but would ultimately understand why Kara kept her superhero identity a secret from her.

“She’s very accepting to aliens and people that are different, so why would she be any different with Kara?” McGrath told Entertainment Weekly last May. “Absolutely she’d feel, in a way, betrayed and hurt that her friend hadn’t trusted her, but at the same time, I think she’s a very levelheaded person, so she understands that it would be difficult for Kara to ultimately trust a Luthor with that secret. ... I’d like to think she’d be very accepting of her best friend and the fact that her best friend is different.”

While it’s unclear when Lena will exactly discover Kara’s secret, Benoist told Entertainment Weekly that Season 3, more than ever, will see Kara struggle with whether to finally tell Lena that she’s Supergirl.

“I think Kara probably battles that more often than we see because Lena’s her best friend and she’s told every other confidant in her life,” Benoist said. “She probably struggles with that on a daily basis. [And] she probably knows deep down that it wouldn’t be the greatest thing to reveal to someone of that lineage.”

Would you like to see Lena learn about Kara’s secret soon? Or would you like to see the L-Corp CEO be kept in the dark? “Supergirl” Season 3 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
