Since last year, rumors of Microsoft releasing a Surface Book 2 sequel have been rampant. Despite the introduction of a performance base upgrade to the Surface Book PC last fall, reports about a Surface Book 2 machine kept on coming. Unfortunately, a new report says the device is not ready yet, so consumers should not expect to see a Surface Book 2 release date anytime soon.

On ZDNet reported that the Redmond tech giant’s anticipated Spring hardware launch event is unlikely to bring out the Surface Book 2. The report says sources continue to say that Microsoft is introducing new products this spring, but the Surface Book 2 isn’t going to be one of them. The new products are instead believed to be new categories in the Surface-branded series.

ZDNet notes that it’s likely for Microsoft to introduce a new clamshell-like Surface at this point, but it will belong to its own category given that the tech giant is building hardware to offer something new to the public sans looking at what its competitors are doing. The new device is said to make use and take advantage of the Windows 10 Creators Update that is slated for release in early April. Should this be true, the new device could feature 3D Paint, Beam game streaming, Game Mode, Windows Mixed Reality support, updated Edge browser and updated functionalities pertaining to security and manageability.

Previously, we also learned during the latest Windows Weekly session that Microsoft could be introducing a new breed of clamshell devices that still focuses on the Creatives like the Surface Studio and the Surface Book.

Over the weekend, Microsoft was awarded with patent US 2017/0086308 that contains details pertaining to a foldable display device that renders images continuously albeit its folding gab in the middle. The patent also mentions the use of OLED panels and liquid crystal display in making the display device. While the patent mentions the different configurations of components to make the display device work, there is no specific information on its size. Because of this, Phone Arena reported that the patent could be for the long-rumored Surface Phone, a 2-in-1 device that could transform from a smartphone to a tablet and vice versa.

DigiTimes reported early this month that Microsoft is already producing a new Surface Book with a 13.5-inch display and chassis made of magnesium aluminum-alloy. However, Foley says the Taiwanese website if fairly unreliable when it comes to leaks of new products. Thus, Foley maintains that a new Surface Book is still not releasing anytime soon. Since nothing’s been set in stone yet, consumers are asked to take all of these speculations and reports with a grain of salt. It’s best to just wait for the Redmond giant to unveil its new products this spring.
