Swedish Woman Steals Train, Crashes It Into Apartment Building (PHOTOS)

A young woman stole a passenger train, drove it at a high speed and rammed it into an apartment building near Stockholm, Sweden, Tuesday.

The unidentified woman, who works at the train depot in Saltsjoebaden, outside Stockholm, was seriously injured in the incident and was shifted to a hospital, Reuters has reported.

The passenger train was empty.  The woman somehow got access to the controls of the locomotive and started it. The train sped through the station barriers and stopped after crashing into a nearby three-floor apartment building.

Tomas Hedenius, a spokesman for train operator Arriva, said the woman, born in 1990, stole the four-car train from the depot in Saltsjoebaden, the Associated Press has reported.

The engine rammed into the kitchen of the apartment. Five to seven people were present in the building at the time of the incident and none of them was hurt.

“It's incredibly lucky that no one in the house was injured,” a police spokesperson told Tidningarnas Telegrambyra news agency.

The woman had been trapped in the train for two hours after it hit the building. She was rescued by the emergency service crew and flown to the hospital.  She was under arrest, Reuters reported.

It was not known why the woman hijacked the train or how she had got access to it. The incident sparked public anger over lax security. “It shouldn't be possible for unauthorized people to drive our trains,” Christer G Wennerholm of the Stockholm County Council’s traffic committee said in a statement, RT news channel reported.
