39-year-old swimming champion Janet Evans broke a world masters record Saturday morning in the 400-meter freestyle for her age group, 35-39. . This is her first competition since the '96 Olympics.

Evans, from Orange County, timing was 4:23.82. He broke the previous world record with 4:26.17 in 1997 for the 35-39 age group.

The Olympic gold medal champion hopes to make the U.S. olympic team in 2012.
