Australia-based Sylvania Platinum Ltd. said Thursday it applied for a permit to mine in the northernmost part of South African.

Sylvania, which expects a decision on its application next year, aims to build a mine and related facilities at the Volspruit platinum group metals project in Limpopo.

Part of the project will be a 50-50 venture with Jubilee Platinum.

The ability to proceed with the project now depends on the granting of the mining right, as well as the approval for the environmental management plan. A decision on both these submissions is due during 2012, the company said in a statement.
