Rumors are swirling within Foodie Nation that indicates Taco Bell, which is owned by Yum Brands Inc. (NYSE:YUM), is testing a waffle taco breakfast offering. The taco, which would serve as the fast-food restaurants first breakfast item, was first seen in an Instagram photo that recently surfaced on the Internet.
While Taco Bell reps have yet to disclose details related to the waffle taco, a staff member at Taco Bell’s Santa Ana, Calif., location did tell NBC News that it’s in a testing phase and is part of the chain’s increased efforts to develop a successful breakfast service.
The unidentified staff member also confirmed that the waffle is lightly fried and stuffed with a scrambled egg and a sausage patty, then folded over and served with maple syrup on the side. The waffle taco would sell for a mere 89 cents, according to NBC News.
Last year, Taco Bell did a limited offering of its breakfast menu – the FirstMeal menu – which included breakfast burritos, hash browns and the A.M. Crunch Wrap, a grilled flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, and a hash brown. The California-based company did a small test run of the menu at about 800 locations in 10 states, but eventually plans to roll it out to all 6,000 locations nationwide, presumably with the waffle taco as its star item.
While the waffle taco would seem like somewhat of a revolutionary idea within the fast-food industry, the highly-anticipated product will most likely be compared to the McGriddle – McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) breakfast offering, which is an egg sandwich served on super-sweet maple griddle cakes. Dunkin’ Donuts also introduced a Waffle Breakfast Sandwich, but it has since been discontinued.
Consumers looking to try the Waffle Taco before it's rolled out nationally can find the item at the following locations:
2246 S. Grand Ave., Santa Ana, CA 92705
4101 Jamboree Rd, Newport Beach, CA 92660
Breakfast is served until 11 am.
