Actress Taryn Manning appeared in court on Friday and was charged with attacking her makeup artist.

Manning, 33, was ordered to stay away from her makeup artist, Holliann Hartman, 23, whom she allegedly, choked, punched, scratched, and slammed against a wall during an altercation. The incident took place in Manning’s suite at the Dream Downtown hotel in New York, according to the criminal complaint released at her arraignment Friday, as reported by the city's Daily News.

The incident occurred Thursday around 5 a.m. EDT, the newspaper reported. Police said Hartman suffered bruises about her head and body.

Joseph Tacopina, Manning’s lawyer, told the Daily News an argument turned into the physical altercation after the two spent a “grueling” day together working on the release of Manning’s new song and music video. Tacopina said the fight was an isolated incident exacerbated by the high-stress situation.

Manning has been charged with misdemeanor assault and choking. New York County (Manhattan) Supreme Court Judge Alexander M. Tisch released Manning without bail. She is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 13.

According to People magazine, Tacopina insisted the situation is not as serious as it appears. He claimed Hartman had told him she does not intend to press charges.

"I expect it to be resolved based on conversation I had with [Holly Hartman]," he said

Tacopina has not provided details of the argument that apparently precipitated the fight or said whether there was alcohol involved, but he contended this is unusual behavior for his client.

"If you know about Taryn, and her track record and her background, she's not a petulant little kid," he told the Daily News. "She's a 33-year-old, serious, well-accomplished actress, artist who is here promoting her song on VH1.”
