Following about a week of heavy selling and volatility, technology stocks led today's rebound in fine fashion. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite (COMP) added about 3.5% to close at 2,673.6, while the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) surged nearly 4% today. Digging into the activity, Apple (AAPL) and VMware (VMW) were standouts among sector outperformers, with AAPL leading the way higher by posting a gain of more than 10%. Reports of strong initial sales of the iPhone in the U.K. helped drive buying activity on the stock.
Meanwhile, VMware jumped nearly 13% to close at $90.68 per share. The company's initial public offering in mid-August was for a mere $29 per share, marking a gain of more than 210% in just a few scant months. Other technology stars included Research in Motion Limited (RIMM), which added about 9.7%, and Google (GOOG), which soared more than 4% higher.
