“Teen Mom OG” star Farrah Abraham is no stranger to controversy. The reality star found herself in hot water once again after hitting the MTV Movie & TV Awards in a controversial outfit on Sunday.

Farrah arrived at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles wearing a three-piece sari, a bindi and a traditional headpiece. The outfit immediately drew attention, but probably not the kind the “Teen Mom OG” star was looking for. Farrah’s been slammed by some for appropriating Indian culture.

One Twitter user who, we must note, is not the real Gary Shirley, joked that Farrah’s outfit was a desperate plea to win over ex-boyfriend Simon Saran. Others simply questioned her thought process. Farrah’s outfit was called a number of things, including “bad and desperate.”

It wasn’t all bad publicity, however. Some loyal fans looked beyond the cultural aspect of the outfit. Farrah was praised by fans who called her outfit “stunning.”

It appears the mother of one was ready for the backlash, though. When asked about her outfit on the red carpet, Farrah said she “wanted to bring culture to the red carpet.” She claimed wearing the traditional garb was her way of urging others to give other cultures a chance.

“I think this will inspire others to embrace new cultures and have good experiences,” she told TooFab.

Farrah noted that the outfit was “Bollywood” inspired, though she didn’t see anything wrong with her wearing it. In fact, she told TooFab she felt “freaking amazing” and “sexy” wearing it. It’s not clear who designed the look for her.

In previous years, the controversial MTV star has opted for more subdued looks. In 2016, she arrived at the awards show wearing a black and gold gown. The look was an homage to old Hollywood, which she solidified with luxurious curls.

She’s not the first to get in trouble for appropriating Indian culture at the MTV Movie Awards. As the New York Daily News reported, Selena Gomez sported a bindi in 2015, which didn’t go over well with fans. Rajan Zed, leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism responded in a statement, explaining the significance of the marking.

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol,” he said at the time. “It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”

Vanessa Hudgens faced similar backlash in 2014. The drama began after she showed off her bindi dust/tan line on her forehead. She was flooded with backlash in the comment section on her Instagram.

Farrah has not yet responded to the backlash. Given her interview comments, it seems unlikely that the “Teen Mom OG” star will be apologizing any time soon.
