A Florida teen shot his 6-year-old sister in Broward County over the weekend in what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Angela Divin, 6, is recovering at Broward County Medical Center after allegedly being shot by her 13-year-old brother inside their home in Oakland Park, Fla., around 7 p.m. Saturday, the Broward County sheriff’s office said.

The 6-year-old was originally said to be in critical condition, but is “now reported to be improving,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Monday.

The 13-year-old brother’s name was being withheld pending the police investigation into the shooting. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the shooting, which it said “initially appears to be accidental.”

The teen and his 6-year-old sister were home alone when the brother found a handgun. He then shot his sister, but the circumstances of the shooting are unclear.

Justin Latourrette, 29, a neighbor of the children, recalled hearing a “loud boom” at the time of the shooting and then witnessing paramedics tending to Angela.

"Her shirt was bloody, and you could see through a piece of gauze that she had a hole in her chest above the heart," Latourrette told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Her eyes were wide open in a blank stare, like she was in shock. I'll never forget that look."

Latourrette said he noticed the siblings were unsupervised and thought it was odd that they were washing their family’s car alone.

“I thought it was strange,” he said. “They didn’t seem to have any supervision.”
