Two Texas teenagers out on a joyride looking for girls ended up thwarting a kidnapping. Aaron Arias, 19, and Jamal Harris, 17, were driving along Highway 175 near Dallas when they spotted an attractive girl in the backseat of a car nearby, ABC News reported. The two realized the girl was in trouble when she mouthed the words, “Help me.”

They immediately dialed 911. “Yes, I’m on the highway. I’m witnessing a robbery. Not a robbery, a kidnapping,” Arias told the 911 operator. “It’s me and another guy. So we’re checking out the girl in the backseat because we’re like, ‘OK, she’s kind of attractive,’ and then all of a sudden the guy is turned back, looking at us. We looked in the backseat and the blond female in the back was saying, ‘Help me,’ or something, whispering it. So I’m assuming it is a kidnapping.”

According to ABC News, police arrived at the scene within minutes and pulled the car over. Charles Atkins Lewis, 37, was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping. Police said he approached the unidentified 25-year-old woman at gunpoint and forced her into his car in downtown Dallas.

“They drive right in front of us, and I see her touch the back windshield, and I saw her face, and that’s when I knew we had to go after them,” Arias told the Dallas television station WFAA. “He was driving crazy, swerving and everything,” Arias said. “And at one point he started turning on and off his lights, so we knew that he knew he was being followed.”

According to WFAA, the woman was effusive in thanking the duo. “The hugs, the tears, like, she was crying because she was beyond grateful,” Arias said.

“You don't need a cape to be a hero,” Harris said. "You just have to be yourself and just respond.”
