Three American hikers were on Monday charged in Iran for espionage after crossing into the Iranian border illegally, the Associated Press reported.

In all countries, crossing borders would have a very heavy sentence, according to the law, Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said in a press conference in Istanbul.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the trio are innocent and has called for their release.
