Bruno Bichir has joined the cast of the much anticipated DC live-action series “Titans.”

According to Deadline, Bichir will portray the recurring role of Dr. Niles Caulder, aka The Chief. A pioneer in medical science, Dr. Caulder searches the world over for those on the edge of death in need of a miracle. Described as controversial yet brilliant, Dr. Caulder won’t stop to help those he believes are in need, including his collection of strange heroes known as The Doom Patrol.

In the comics, Dr. Caulder is a paraplegic gifted with a genius-level intellect. He founded and organized the Doom Patrol to protect the innocent, fight crime, and teach humanity to accept others who live as ostracized freaks. The original members of Doom Patrol included Beast Boy, Elasti-Girl, Mento, Negative Man, and Robotman. Created by Arnold Drake, Bruno Premiani, Murray Boltinoff, and Bob Haney, the Doom Patrol first appeared in “My Greatest Adventure” #80 published in 1963.

The Doom Patrol’s appearance on “Titans” was announced by executive producer Geoff Johns via Twitter last week. “The #Titans are getting some company,” Johns tweeted last Friday along with a photo of the cover page of the script for “Titans” Season 1, episode 5, titled “Doom Patrol.”

“Titans” follows the adventure of a group of young superheroes led by Batman’s former protégé Dick Grayson/Robin (Brenton Thwaites). In addition to Thwaites, the series also stars Anna Diop as Koriand’r/Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, and Ryan Potter as Garfield Logan/Beast Boy.

Bichir joins previously announced recurring cast members Alan Ritchson as Hank Hall/Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dawn Granger/Dove, Lindsey Gort as Detective Amy Rohrbach, and Seamus Dever, whose role is yet to be announced.

Bichir played the series regular role of Fernando Duque in the first two seasons of Netflix’s “Narcos.” He also recurred as Dr. Daniel Vega in Season 1 of Sony Pictures Television Networks’ crime thriller “Absentia.” On the film side, Bichir starred opposite Tilda Swinton in the crime drama “Julia,” opposite Gael Garcia Bernal and Penelope Cruz in the comedy “Don’t Tempt Me,” and with his brother, Demian, in the biopic “Che.”

“Titans” is set to debut this year on Warner Bros. Digital Networks’ upcoming DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service.
