TNT announced on Friday that it is ending the hit series “The closer after a run of seven seasons.

The Closer will wrap up its series run in 2011 after the conclusion of its 15-episode seventh season.

The network revealed that as their Emmy winning star of the series Kyra Sedgwick’s contract ends in 2011,they have decided to wrap up the series too

In a press release, the network said It’s impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought 'The Closer' to TNT viewers. Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks stated. 'The Closer' was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT’s original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television.

The Closer premiered on TNT in 2005 and will reach its 100th episode during the upcoming seventh season.

I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on 'The Closer,' Sedgwick states. . I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of 'The Closer,' for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.

The closer has never been popular amongst the award circuit. It has never earned a series nomination from either Emmys or Golden Globes, it has picked up four SAG Awards nods for the ensemble. Kyra Sedgwick, finally, earned her Emmy after four previous nominations this year. She has five Golden Globe nominations and one win, plus five SAG Award nominations for the role.

Currently wrapping up its sixth season, The Closer managed nearly 8 million viewers this summer in its sixth season, according to Nileson &Co., making it one of the top shows on basic cable.

The Closer fans are going to miss the series but as someone put said it is better to go out blazing than as a damp squib as some of the later runs of ER and Lost proved to be.
