A toddler was mauled to death by seven dogs in Georgia on Wednesday, and the girl’s grandmother tried to rescue her, but was too late.

The young girl who would have turned two-years-old in June, was mauled by pit bulls or pit pull mixes in her backyard.

Police received a call at 6:24 p.m. that the toddler’s unidentified grandmother had awaken to some commotion and looked out the back window and saw family dogs brutally attacking the girl. The grandmother and several others ran to help the girl, but to no avail, NBC-affiliate WSAV reports.

“When we got here and spoke to EMS, they told us that when they got here, she was already cold," Bryan County Deputy Sheriff James Beatty said. "There was nothing they could do.”

Beatty said the girl’s 12-year-old brother may have taken her into the backyard to play, and mistakenly left her there or thought she had returned to the front yard. He said the toddler may also have wandered out the doggy door.

The toddler apparently played with the dogs on previous occasions, and it's unclear why they turned on her. “All the dogs had access to the house, nine dogs in all,” Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith said.

“She habitually played with dogs, all of them. But they drug her all over the yard. Something turned them on her. We don’t know what.”

Smith said the investigation is continuing, and all seven dogs were put down at the scene.

Earlier this month, in Walworth, Wis., a 14-month-old boy was mauled to death by pit bulls at his babysitter’s home. The boy died hours later.
