Ontario - A toddler from California is lucky to be alive after getting trapped inside a running washing machine at a laundromat.

Witnesses nearby saw the boy tumbling inside and quickly opened the door to save him.

The 20-month-old boy was inside the machine for a few seconds, according to Sgt. Robert Freire of Ontario Police Department, who said the witnesses' actions prevented a tragic result.

Apparently, a teenaged family member was playing with the tot and closed the door of the washing machine, which then locked and turned on.

The boy is in serious but stable condition.
