Tom Cruise has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Bauer Publications, owner of the tabloids Life & Style and In Touch, which had run a story claiming Cruise had abandoned his daughter, Suri Cruise.

According to TMZ, Life & Style ran the story with a headline of “Suri In Tears, Abandoned By Her Dad” while In Touch ran the story in October with the headline “Abandoned By Daddy.”

According to Cruise’s lawyer, Bertram Fields, "Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue,” reports TMZ.

Naturally, the divorce of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes was a massive story for anyone remotely interested in celebrity news. Cruise’s role in Scientology was examined, along with who would be the next Mrs. Cruise, what would be next for Holmes and most importantly, what will happen to 6-year-old Suri.

Scandal sells for tabloids and most people take their veracity with a grain of salt. At the same time, these tabloids do reach millions of eyes and that is why Cruise filed a lawsuit over the claims made in Life & Style and In Touch.

Fields said he had reached out to Life & Style as well as In Touch prior to the publication of the stories to correct any false information, but to no avail. According to the claim, Fields notes, “defendants have demonstrated that they have no interest in the truth, and will stop at nothing to push the sales of their tabloids, even if this means exploiting a defenseless 6-year-old child on their cover.”

In July, Fields had contacted the National Enquirer claiming the tabloid had made similar defamatory claims in a reported story of Cruise’s physical and verbal abuse of Holmes that had a headline of “Inside Tom’s House Of Horrors,” reports The Hollywood Reporter.
