A movie version of Rock of Ages, the Broadway musical built around the rock music of 80s, is creating a huge buzz about who is going to star in it. The actors’ names being bandied about are Tom Cruise, Mary J Blige, Gwyneth Paltrow, Taylor Swift and Alec Baldwin.

The movie funded by New Line Cinema has roped in Adam Shankman of Hairspray fame, to direct the film. It is his recent tweet about possible casting rumours that has stirred the speculations.

Access Hollywood had reported in October that Tom Cruise was ready to star in a musical and his rep had confirmed it to the website. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Cruise is very close to signing the project and he has been providing notes on the script for some time.

The filmmakers want Tom Cruise to play Sacee Jaxx, a rock star nearing the end of his fame. Taylor Swift will play his love interest Sherrie Christian, a small town girl pursuing her dream in big city.

Gwyneth Paltrow is reading the script, according to Entertainment Weekly, and finds it interesting. If she agrees, she will play a Rolling Stone reporter trying to interview Jaxx.

Alec Baldwin is slated to portray Dennis Dupree, a former rocker who runs the 'Rock of Ages' club while Mary J Blige is expected to play the owner of a strip club.

The love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The musical, which is currently running at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009.

If the cast is finalized, it will be interesting to see Tom Cruise in a singing role. Gwenyth has already showcased her vocal talent in Country Strong and her appearance in Glee
