Breaking up is always tough. Like every year, 2014 saw some of America’s most beloved star couples throw up a white flag and go their separate ways. This year saw everything from lightening in a bottle romances fizzle to long-standing marriages end in divorce. Below are the top 10 most crushing breakups of 2014.

Jennifer Lawrence & Nicholas Hoult

In August, E! News reported that the “Hunger Games” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past” stars split after rekindling their relationship in 2013. A rep for the couple told the outlet that the split was “very amicable.” They reportedly couldn’t keep the relationship afloat with their busy schedules. Lawrence told Marie Claire that, given everything, she wasn’t ready to take the relationship to the next level with Hoult. She later began dating Chris Martin, but they broke up soon after.

Toni Garrn & Leonardo DiCaprio

Add this one to the highlight reel. Recently the couple called it quits after dating since May of 2013. The end allegedly came when DiCaprio partied a little too hard at a Miami night club. According to sources at Life And Style, the 40-year-old actor allegedly left the venue with about twenty models. News of the split between he and his 22-year-old girlfriend came a few days after the incident.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon

News first broke of this couple’s divorce back in August when Cannon allegedly told The Insider that he and Carey were living apart. The couple has 3-year-old twins that have apparently been a source of contention in the divorce proceedings. People Magazine reports that Carey was three hours late to her live performance at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting because she was on the phone with lawyers trying to work out custody of the children and their property.

Robin Wright & Ben Foster

After meeting on the set of the 2011 film “Rampart,” the two started a relationship that ended after a 10 month engagement. According to Us Magazine, the 48-year-old “House of Cards” actress called off the engagement after their schedules fell out of sync for too long. A source told the outlet that their 14-year age difference (Foster is 34) contributed to the breakup as well.

Mama June & Sugar Bear

After exchanging vows in May, E! Online reports that the parents of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” star Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, decided to call it quits. The reality TV stars are officially single and Mama June plans to move the children out of their Georgia home and closer to relatives as soon as the family has a break from filming their reality show for TLC. Season 4 of the show aired in August.

Ricky Martin & Carlos Gonzalez

After dating for years, the two decided to end the relationship earlier this year. Although they spoke highly of one another in a 2012 issue of Vanity Fair, they split after complications arose from their long-distance relationship and Martin’s two children, which he had via a surrogate in 2008, according to People Magazine.

Katy Perry & John Mayer

Mayer first confirmed that he was no longer dating the singer during an appearance on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show." Their relationship became a matter for the public in June of this year when they were spotted together, according to MTV News. After that, they attended the Grammy Awards together. Their split was especially shocking to those paying close attention to their will-they-won’t-they romance story. E! Online reports that the couple were knocking on the door of an engagement when Mayer announced the split.

The Captain & Tennille

Despite having their names be synonymous with love songs, the Captain and Tennille (Daryl Dragon and Cathryn Tennille) filed for divorce in 2014, according to RumorFix. Tennille, 73, filed the papers in January at the Prescott, Arizona, city courthouse. Dragon, 71, played keyboard for the Beach Boys before meeting his wife of 39 years. The two became a musical powerhouse together with such songs as “Love Will Keep Us Together,” and “Do That to Me One More Time.”

Amy & Matt Roloff

The “Little People, Big World” stars ended their marriage of 26 years in 2014. Although the couple is separated, People reports that Matt is still working on the farm and living in the guest house. The family’s four children, Jeremy, Zack, Molly and Jacob continue to live with both of their parents and continue the work done on their hit TLC show. The couple apparently split due to deeper issues in their marriage that existed even before the show.

Sofia Vergara & Nick Loeb

The 41-year-old “Modern Family” actress split from her fiancé earlier this year saying that due to their increasingly hectic schedules, the relationship simply stopped being fun for them. However, Us Magazine notes that Loeb’s ambition may have played a hand in the end of their marriage. According to the outlet, he tried very hard to use Vergara’s star power to launch his own acting career and promote his business.
