Internet phone and messaging service provider Skype said Sunday it plans to buy mobile group messaging service provider GroupMe.

The deal was announced just months after Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion.

The value of the deal was not disclosed, but All Things Digital reported that Skype could be paying around $85 million for GroupMe.

The announcement not only brought small tech companies into focus but also made Wall Street analysts raise eyebrows because GroupMe is a super-small, zero-revenue tech company founded only last year at the Techcrunch Disrupt Hackathon. It operates out of New York, has 20-odd employees and doesn't have any monetization strategy.

GroupMe also faces threat from rival messaging services such as Kik, Highnote, Facebook Messenger, Google+ Huddle and an upcoming group-messaging feature called iMessage, which will come with Apple's new iOS 5 operating system.
