Tottenham made a valiant attempt to overturn their first leg deficit of 4-0 on Wednesday, but Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory via Cristiano Ronaldo's goal at White Hart Lane to go through 5-0 on aggregate, setting up a semi final El Classico with Barcelona.
Spurs' dream run in Europe, which saw them stave off the likes of Inter Milan and AC Milan, came to end mainly due to the 4-0 mauling they suffered in the first leg at the Bernabeu. It meant they had to score five on the day without conceding against Madrid.
They started off brightly, and had three penalty appeals denied, at least two of which could have been given. However, Real scored shortly after coming out in the second after Heurelho Gomes clumsily failed to hold on to Ronaldo's powerful strike from distance.
Spurs continued attacking, backed by their appreciating supporters, but ultimately they failed to find a consolation goal to mark the end of their exciting Champions League debut.
