Memphis Depay PSV Netherlands

Eager to bolster his attacking and midfield, new Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has targeted several Premier League players. However the Argentine’s splash move of the summer may start in the Netherlands. According to reports, Pochettino and Tottenham received a boost of confidence after PSV winger Memphis Depay turned down a contract extension with the Dutch side. Dubbed by some as "the next Cristiano Ronaldo," the 20-year-old impressed during the Netherlands' World Cup run last month, scoring two goals including the winner against Australia in group play. But as the transfer window nears its closing on Sept. 1, Spurs face some stiff competition for Depay.

Daily Express reported Tuesday that Depay, whose contract runs until 2017, refused to sign an extension with PSV thus opening a door for Tottenham to swoop in with a £15 million bid. However, Manchester United and Depay’s national coach Louis van Gaal are also tracking the budding star. United is in a precarious position, since Van Gaal’s only secured two summer signings and whiffed on countless others while the Old Trafford side attempts a comeback from last year’s seventh place finish, right behind Spurs.

Furthermore, adding the young fresh legs of Depay to the lineup would certainly help Tottenham both domestically and abroad. As ESPN FC pointed out, previous manager Andre Villas-Boas tired out his best players in Europa League, and the squad’s Premier League play suffered greatly. Depay would provide some assurances from such fatigue.

Should Pochettino manage to steal Depay from deep-pocketed United, that could cancel out any opportunity of acquiring striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and midfielder Marouane Fellaini. According to Caught Offside, Tottenham are preparing to make a £24 million for the pair. Pochettino has come up short on attempts to land Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, and the 26-year-old Belgian could be an excellent second option. However Fellaini suffered a left ankle injury during training Thursday, Daily Mail reports, and there are fears he could have ligament damage.

Hernandez on the other hand is fit, and offers Tottenham a younger scoring option with Roberto Saldado, 29, and Emmanuel Adebayor, 30, another year older. Hernandez, 26, has recorded 37 goals in 102 appearances for United over the last three years. Hernandez would immediately become one of the most dangerous threats at White Hart Lane should the deal go down.

Tottenham are also one of three English clubs eyeing Barcelona defensive midfielder Alex Song, according to Daily Telegraph. The out-of-favor 26-year-old has been looking for a way out of Spain two years after his switch from Arsenal. Everton and United are the other clubs interested in Song, who prefers a return to Premier League rather than the offers coming from Italy’s Serie A and Turkish side Galatasaray. Some reports have pegged the Catalans asking price for song at £10 million, but Telegraph says the Spanish titans have set an £8 million valuation.
