After he surprised the market with a new lifeline for banks, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet stepped up his pressure on euro area leaders and asked them for decisive action at this time of crisis.

Ahead of the finance ministers meeting today in Wroclaw, Poland Trichet said that they need to show the same unity of purpose as the central bank reflected in the decision taken by the Governing Council yesterday to expand dollar funding to banks that are pressured by the spreading crisis.
