President Donald Trump on Sunday decided to gift the people of hurricane-hit areas what he apparently thought they needed the most — a golf trophy.

Needleless to say, the act only earned him the ire of Twitter users.

In what can be considered as a gift of goodwill, the president honored those suffering in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico by dedicating a trophy at the Presidents Cup golf tournament — a competition that pits teams of U.S. golfers against international competitors — held at Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City, New Jersey, reports said.

“I want to just remember them, and we’re going to dedicate this trophy to all those people who went through so much, that we love, that are part of our great state, really a part of our great nation,” Trump said at the golf club, while holding the cup.

Trump, who is the tournament's honorary chairman, made the comments as he gave away the gold trophy to U.S. captain Steve Stricker and the American team that defeated the International team in the biggest victory by either side in 17 years.

"On behalf of all of the people of Texas, and ... if you look today and you see what's happening, how horrible it is but we have it under really great control, Puerto Rico. And the people of Florida who have really suffered over this last period of time with the hurricanes,”Trump stated before presenting the trophy.

He then went on to talk about golf again and praised U.S. team for their “unbelievable playing.”

Reports said Trump attending the tournament marked the first time a sitting president has attended the event since former President Bill Clinton in 2000.

According to reports, one attendee, who wasn’t impressed with Trump dedicating the trophy to people who were still deprived of basic necessities, yelled: “You don’t give a s--- about Puerto Rico!”

The man was not alone in his dissatisfaction, and Twitter users too joined him in mocking the president for dedicating a golf trophy after his widely criticized response to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) also blasted the president for dedicating the golf trophy, saying the move struck him “as very ‘let them eat cake.’”

Trump’s comments at the tournament came after he lashed out at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, accusing her of "poor leadership." Earlier on Sunday Trump dismissed those who questioned his administration’s commitment to rebuilding Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria as “politically motivated ingrates.”

Trump had earlier said the island of Puerto Rico was in "deep trouble" and blamed the island’s poor infrastructure and large debt amid the widespread devastation caused by the hurricane. The president, in a series of tweets, said the debt that the island owed to Wall Street and banks “must be dealt with.”
