Two African immigrants from Senegal have been shot to death by an unknown gunman in a busy piazza in Florence, Italy, according to various European media outlets.

Another man was injured in the attack. He was taken to Careggi Hospital in Florence.

While details are sketchy, a witness told the ANSA news agency that the murders – which took place on the edge of the Piazza Dalmatia -- had the look and feel of an execution.

Police said that 50-year-old man disembarked from a van and shot three African street vendors in cold blood. As the killer fled the scene, shoppers and tourists dispersed and many ran into local stores for safety.

However, other media claimed that the shooter himself died after killing himself.

The British paper Daily Telegraph tweeted that the killer was Gianluca Casseri, an alleged member of a far right group.
