Scotland yard has apparently arrested “Topiary”, one of the most vocal members of LulzSec.

On Tuesday, according to the UK’s Metropolitan Police website, the Metropolitan Service’s Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU), with the help of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA), “arrested a 19-year-old man in a pre-planned intelligence-led operation.”

The statement went on to say that the suspect “ is believed to be linked to an ongoing international investigation in to the criminal activity of the so-called ‘hacktivist’ groups Anonymous and LulzSec, and uses the online nickname ‘Topiary’ which is presented as the spokesperson for the groups. He was arrested at a residential address in the Shetland Islands and is currently being transported to a police station in central London.”

British police confirmed that another teenage boy is giving them information but has not been arrested; it is not known whether this is another Anonymous member, a hacker, a friend, et cetera. Police continue to search the Shetland Islands address, as well as another home in Lincolnshire.

The police report did not specifically state which of the Anonymous or LulzSec operations were at issue, simply that the arrest was part of an “ongoing investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.”

Anonymous suspects are currently being rounded up by a number of law enforcement agencies; the FBI in the United States seem mainly concerned with DDoS attack on PayPal, Visa, and orther financial institutions, while the Spanish arrests of last month seemed largely over the government website intrusions.

The @LulzSec Twitter account has indeed been silent for some 8 hours (at the time of this writing), lending credence to the assertion that Topiary was indeed responsible for the group’s communications. However, longer breaks in communication have been observed previously, so it may be too soon to jump to conclusions.
