The Oscars are about triumph and recognition of one’s craft. As always, it is the winner who is feted and lionized. But there are some near winners out there who never got the Oscar but are still the leaders of their art.

Here we bring you a list of some near-misses and losses at the Oscars.

At the top of the list is:

Kevin O'Connell, Oscars' unluckiest nominee. He is a sound re-recording mixer who holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations (without a win) at 20, having originally set the record in 2006 with his 18th nomination and loss, making him the unluckiest nominee in the history of the Academy Awards.

Legendary film personalities who never made it include:

Cary Grant: He acted in more than 70 romantic comedies and thrillers but was ignored by the Academy because he went independent and was not on contract with any of the studios.

James Dean: He died in 1955 after completing his third film, Giant.

Steve McQueen: He was nominated once for his role in “The Sand Pebbles” in 1966.

Harrison Ford: He was nominated just once for “Witness”, 1985. He has starred in six high grossing films –The Star Wars trilogy and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Peter O’Toole: He holds the record for no wins among actors, eight nominations with no gold. The nominations were for The Lion in Winter; Goodbye, Mr. Chips; The Ruling Class; The Stunt Man; My Favorite Year; Venus; and The Lawrence of Arabia. He did win an honorary Oscars in 2003.

Alfred Hitchcock : He got five nominations for Rebecca, Suspicion, Lifeboat, Spellbound, Rear Window and Psycho . The total number of Oscar nominations (including winners) earned by films he directed is fifty.

Richard Burton: Seven nominations for The Robe, Becket, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Anne of a Thousand Days .

Akira Kurosowa: He got one nomination for Ran. Seven Samurais got nominations for art direction and costume design and not best director.

Deborah Kerr: Six nominations include Edward, My Son; From Here to Eternity; The King and I; Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison; Separate Tables and The Sundowners .

Thelma Ritter: Six nominations include All About Eve; The Mating Season; With a Song in My Heart; Pickup on South Street; Pillow Talk and Birdman of Alcatraz .

Marilyn Monroe was never nominated.
