U.S. Secretary of Commerce John Bryson, 68, was hospitalized late Saturday near Los Angeles after allegedly being involved in two hit-and-run accidents, the San Gabriel Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff's departments said.

The Commerce Department Monday issued a statement that Bryson had suffered an apparent seizure. In one incident, the secretary apparently drove into a car stopped for a passing train. In the other, he collided with a second car in Rosemead, Calif., where he was found alone and unconscious, the police said.

Bryson was in California to speak at a high school graduation. The former California utility executive assumed office last year.
