Stocks were mixed in late trading on Monday with broader indexes posting small declines while the technology stocks rose higher ahead of Apple's quarterly earnings announcement.

Shares of consumer electronics maker Apple gained 1.7 percent to $173.17 ahead of an earnings report from Apple to be released after the market close. Shares of Google rose 0.9 percent to $650.67. Oracle shares were up 2 percent to $21.17.

Some financial stocks also gained. U.S. securities firm Bear Stearns gained 90 cents or 0.77 percent to reach $117.31 after it announced that it had struck a deal with Chinese securities firm Citic to invest $1 billion in each other and forge a closer alliance for to make new products and services in China and abroad.

Other banks also rose, with Wells Fargo rising 3 percent to $33.85 and investment bank Goldman Sachs adding 2.7 percent to $223.64

In late trading the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 10.81, or 0.1 percent, to 13,511.21. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 2.08, or 0.1 percent, to 1,498.55 at 3:18 p.m. in New York. The technology heavy Nasdaq increased 15.43, or 0.6 percent, to 2,740.59.
