FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - The volume of US workers applying for unemployment benefits for the first time has decreased at an unexpected extent in the week of May 24, according to data released by the US Labor Department.

The seasonally adjusted jobless claims volume declined by 18,000 persons to 357,000 in the week ending ton May 24, a larger than expected decline, as market analysts had advanced a total volume of about 370,000 new claims. Initial claims for the previous week have been revised up to 375,000 from the previously released 372,000 figure.

The four week moving average, considered more trustworthy, since it erases seasonal influences has posted a 2,500 decline to 370,500.
