FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Claims for unemployment benefits by recently laid off workers have declined in the week of January 2 for second consecutive week, although the total amount of claims remains at a level well above the average , according to figures released by the US Labor Department.

Initial jobless claims have declined by 24 k in the week of January the 2nd to a total volume of 467,000 claims, from the downwardly revised total volume of 491,000 claims. The four week moving average shows a decline by 27,000 claims to 525,750, from 552,750 in the previous week.

Continuing jobless claims have increased by 101,000 to 4,611,000 in the week of December 27, the highest level since 1982.
