While on 24-hour shore leave in Dubai, a 28-year-old female U.S. Navy sailor beat up a bus driver who threatened her with rape at knifepoint on Jan. 19.

The bus driver, identified as a 21-year-old Pakistani national known as K.S., was charged in court on Thursday with attempted rape, threatening to kill, assault and consuming alcohol illegally. He pled guilty only to the alcohol charge, and he claimed that, because he was drunk, he did not remember the incident, the Daily Mail reports.

The sailor, as described by prosecutors, was shopping at the Mall of Emirates in Dubai, and she was having trouble getting a cab back to her dock. Instead, she got on a bus but became suspicious when the bus driver went off the main road. In court, the sailor said, “I noticed he did not take the main road, and, when I asked him, he told me not to worry.”

The driver pulled over a few minutes later and tried to kiss the sailor. When she rebuffed his advances, prosecutors said K.S. produced a knife and attempted to rape her. The sailor, who received self-defense training, disarmed K.S., broke the knife and pinned him to the ground. She then left the bus and reported the incident to her superior at Port Khalid.

K.S. was arrested, drunk, in his home the next day. The case will be heard again in court on May 1.
