The U.S. Open has not exactly gone according to plan. The final Grand Slam of the year has had a men's side that saw many notable stars withdraw before the start of the tournament or fall in the early rounds, while the women's side ended a drought of multiple Americans missing from the final eight.

The men's quarterfinals include top-seed Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer, along with American Sam Querrey (No. 17). Included in the quarters are Pablo Carreno Busta (No. 12), Juan Martin del Potro (No. 24), Kevin Anderson (No. 28), Diego Schwartzman (No. 29) and unseeded Andrey Rublev, who is ranked No. 53.

The women's side includes four Americans. While seeing No. 9-seed Venus Williams reach the quarterfinals didn't come as much of a surprise, the group also includes No. 15 Madison Keys, No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe and unseeded Sloane Stephens. The last time there were even three Americans in the quarters was 2004 and the last time there were four or more was in 2002 when five reached the final eight.

This year's group is joined by No. 1-seed Karolina Plishkova, No. 13 Petra Kvitova and No. 16 Anastasija Sevastova.

Also in the quarters is Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, who became the second qualifier in the tournament's history to reach the quarterfinals and the first to do so since 1981.

On Tuesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Carreno Busta faces Schwartzman at 12 p.m. ET, while Querrey meets Anderson in the final match of the day at 9 p.m. Stephens takes on Sevastova at about 2:30 p.m, and at 7:00 p.m. Williams faces Kvitova.

Wednesday's matches will include Nadal vs. Rublev and Federer vs. del Potro on the men's side. The women's side will have Pliskova vs. Vandeweghe and Keys vs. Kanepi.

Weeks after Wimbledon, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic shared the same betting odds to win the U.S. Open as Nadal, at +400. But Murray and Djokovic, along with Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori, all backed out before the start. Marin Cilic, who won the 2014 U.S. Open, lost in the third round.

Serena Williams, who had won the U.S. Open six times, did not participate in the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open this year due to her pregnancy. She gave birth to a daughter on Friday.

Top women dropped out early in the tournament, with No. 2 Simona Halep, No. 5 Angelique Kerber and No. 6 Johanna Konta all getting upset in the first round. No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki and No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova both lost in the second round.
