Liverpool News: Lucas Leiva injury a big loss to Liverpool FC

Lucas Leiva injury a real problem for Liverpool FC defence.

During the pre season tour of America, Brendan Rodgers took time out to explain how important he saw Lucas Leiva to his future Liverpool side and his plans for the club as a whole.  Rodgers not only explained how influential and positive Lucas is as a character around the club but also how vital he is to the emerging style Rodgers is seeking to implement at Liverpool FC.  This is why the injury sustained by Lucas at the weekend, and the news that his absence could potentially stretch to early November, is so gut wrenching for the player, the team and the new manager.

"Nothing lasts forever."  This was the phrase uttered by then Liverpool Manager Gerard Houllier on his first visit to Old Trafford as the opposition manager.  He had just taken on the challenge of re-igniting Liverpool's fortunes and, having seen his own teams days of League Championships and European cups become a part of history, he knew more than most about the cyclical nature of footballing success.

This cycle may just be coming round for United and despite their undoubted success over the past two decades, they are now in real danger of being toppled on a regular basis by their neighbours from Eastlands.  Having previously written City off as potential challengers, Ferguson was made to eat his words last season and that can not have been an enjoyable meal for someone who has become accustomed to getting his own way.

Brendan Rodgers is a man with a plan.  He is not the reactionary type, he is a thinker, a planner and someone who has a strategy of how he wants to build the club.  This means he is not the type who is going to be panicked into the transfer market, not a man who will spend £35 million at the last minute on an unproven striker.  That is why his comments after the Manchester City clash at Anfield yesterday were even more intriguing.

In his post match interview, the Liverpool manager revealed that "...If we're going to strengthen then hopefully we can get a few more in."  As you would expect, no names were mentioned, but the fact that the manager suggested more than one potential new signing means we can expect some interesting events at Anfield between now and 31st August.  Here we speculate on exactly where the manager may be looking to strengthen and who Liverpool may be looking to add to the squad over the coming days.

'Agger do' or 'Agger don't?' - The next big question facing Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers.

The new English Premier League season is almost upon us and the signs so far are very promising for Liverpool Football Club.  In preparation for the first game against West Brom on Saturday, they have; managed a relatively easy passage into the Europa League final qualifying stage, beaten a promising Bayer Leverkusen side comfortably, committed the medium term future of Luis Suarez to the club and proved that, in Brendan Rodgers, they have a man who has demonstrated how to handle both the media and the egos at a club that many said would be 'too big for him.'  As Rodgers said last week though, the fans are still looking for him to prove himself and the potential storm brewing over Daniel Agger will be one of the most important challenges he will face during this transfer window.
