“The Vampire Diaries” has had an explosive fifth season so far. Between college, dramatic breakups, new villains and some “doppelganger destiny” drama, the CW series has had its hands full. But the show is about to add one more twist – a flashback!

Fans of the CW show are no stranger to flashbacks. Viewers have been taken all over the world and to different time periods thanks to the grisly history of some our favorite vampires. And “The Vampire Diaries” plans to feature at least one more flashback by the end of season 5.

Earlier this week, “Background Artists Casting Atlanta” posted a call for extras between the ages of 21 and 50 to work a “flashback scene.” Shooting is expected to be sometime between Monday and March 4 in Covington, Ga., with the extras doing a wardrobe fitting this past Wednesday and Thursday.

No other details regarding the flashback scene were released, but the post coincides with the casting announcement of three new roles – Maggie, Luke and Markos. How do these new characters fit in with the flashback scene? We’ve got a couple of theories about their involvement and connection to the past:

Maggie

Maggie, who will be played by former “Hellcats” star Heather Hemmens, is a love interest for Damon’s old BFF, Enzo. She is described as a “kind, warm and engaging medical student,” and “Vampire Diaries” viewers have already heard about her in an episode earlier this season. The medical student had been working for Dr. Whitmore at Whitmore College in 1953 when Enzo was locked up. Enzo revealed to Damon that he had fallen for Maggie, but that she had left the school when she discovered that Dr. Whitmore had been torturing and experimenting on vampires.

When Hemmens was cast it was unclear if her character would be appearing in the modern day, or via a flashback to 1953. With Damon now injected with a virus that forces him to feed on vampires, Enzo might be taking a trip down memory lane in an attempt to help his friend. Or it’s possible that Maggie was turned into a vampire in 1953 and has been locked up at Whitmore ever since.

Luke

Luke, who will be played by Chris Brochu, is a gay student at Whitmore College and brother to Liv – the witch that the gang previously forced to do magic. He will befriend Elena, Caroline and Bonnie, but supposedly has ulterior motives that have to do with the “growing tension between the witches and travelers.” He may possibly be triggering a flashback as a way to inform the Mystic Falls crew about some impending danger from the travelers.

Markos

Markos, who will be played by Raffi Barsoumian, is the latest villain to invade “The Vampire Diaries.” He’s reportedly a charismatic character with supernatural origins and is worshipped by his “followers.” Since he’s supernatural it is easy to suspect that he’s pretty old – which is where the flashback could come into play. And while it’s not clear if he’s linked up with the travelers, we have a feeling that the “doppelganger destiny” storyline will come into play.
