When “The Vampire Diaries” returns to the CW on Thursday, Oct. 3, fans can look forward to some “hot” vampire sex. Executive producer Julie Plec has been dishing out some spoilers regarding the upcoming fifth season of the hit series … and it sounds awesome.

Plec revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the season five premiere episode will be titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” And fortunately fans won’t have to guess about what kind of shenanigans went down between the Mystic Falls crew. “We found a stylized way to show the audience how things went over the summer, what everybody was up to,” Plec explained.

So, what has everyone been up to? And what will season five of “The Vampire Diaries” explore?

College Crossover

Move over Mystic Falls High, the crew will be getting into trouble on their new stomping ground: Whitmore College! While TV series in the past haven’t made college believable, Plec explains that “The Vampire Diaries” has been setting up the move for a while. (I.E. Jenna, Grams and Shane attending or working at Whitmore.)

Although new characters will be introduced thanks to their exciting new venture into higher education, the executive producer promises that the core group will stay intact. And because Damon is still living in Mystic Falls with Jeremy, it allows for an easy crossover between both worlds.

The Elena/Damon Love Affair

Will they or won’t they … that’s what “Vampire Diaries” viewers have been dealing with for the past few seasons. Fortunately season four concluded with the pair very much together, and season five won’t pull them apart anytime soon. Like every relationship that includes someone in college, Elena and Damon will have to deal with long distance problems -- but they have the summer to enjoy their close proximity.

“Damon and Elena have been having hot lovin’ sex,” Plec said of the couple’s summer. They may be getting closer physically, but they still have some issues to overcome. “The biggest hurdles in their relationship come from external sources, people, ideas, notions that are trying to say they’re not supposed to be together,” Plec teased to EW. “It’s really going to be more about them fighting to prove that they should be together and it’s okay.”

Stefan’s Predicament

Stefan appeared to be in a sticky situation at the end of season four when Silas revealed his true self and threw his doppelgänger into the water in a locked box. Fans shouldn’t hold their breaths that Stefan “Houdini’d” himself from his watery grave.

“Poor Stefan has just been on the quarry floor in that safe, drowning over and over again all summer long,” explained Plec to Wetpaint.com. “So he’s struggling, to put it mildly, and hopefully he won’t have to struggle for much longer because his loved ones will realize that he’s missing. But until that happens, he’s just screwed.”

Fortunately the executive producer did tell EW that Stefan WILL be freed from the quarry. Unfortunately he’ll won’t be the same old Stefan when he returns.

Doppelgänger Danger

Fans were well aware that Elena and Katherine were doppelgängers, but the real shocker came during the season four finale when Stefan was revealed to be a doppelgänger of Silas. Executive producer Caroline Dries told Wetpaint.com that new mythologies regarding doppelgänger’s will be a big part of season five.

“Why do doppelgänger’s exist?” asked Dries. “And so now that we realize Stefan’s a doppelgänger, we kind of explore the deeper mythology of why does this weird phenomena occur.”
