Delena fans were devastated when Damon broke up with Elena during the midseason finale of “The Vampire Diaries” – and now actress Nina Dobrev is opening up about the tearful moment!

For those who missed episode 10, “50 Shades of Grayson,” Elena learned of her father’s involvement with the Augustine vampire and discovered that Damon had been tortured at the Whitmore facility for years. Damon’s ordeal led him to exact revenge against the Whitmore family … revenge that he’s still carrying out.

Despite Elena’s initial disgust over Damon’s actions, she stood by her man. But Damon was tired of her always seeing the good in him.

“I’m bad, Elena,” he told her in the midseason finale. “I’m bad for you … I’m choosing to let you go. I’m choosing to relieve you of having to defend me of every awful thing I’ve ever done.”

And while Elena initially tried to argue with Damon, the eldest Salvatore made his stance on the subject pretty clear. Thanks to a sneak peek video of the midseason premiere (and 100th episode) we know that Elena will be dealing with her breakup by hiding under the sheets in her dorm room. But how does Nina Dobrev feel about it?

The actress, who plays not only Elena but Katherine and Amara as well, revealed to E! Online that she wants everyone (Stefan and Katherine included) to “take a break and go find some new people to hang out with.”

According to Dobrev, the perfect girl for Damon would be someone to ground him in order to bring out the best in him. And while Elena did have that sort of relationship with Damon, the bad boy “might not be the best” thing for her. Stefan, on the other hand, needs a woman who “brings him to life” in order to balance out the crazy depression that he seems to fall into every other season. As for whom Elena should be dating? The actress says her character “just needs to go and do her own thing and move to a foreign country.”

“Vampire Diaries” fans know that none of that is going to happen, but when the series returns on Thursday, they can look forward to a “rollercoaster ride.”

“I think they’ll both [Damon and Stefan] always be in her life, so that could get complicated because they’ve both been with her,” Nina Dobrev continued to E! Online of the future of the love triangle. “They both are in love with her, have been in love with her, or won’t admit to still being madly and deeply in love with her and so they are navigating this whole scenario which is quite difficult for all of them. But now there’s an added element that is a big spoiler that I cannot disclose, but that definitely complicates things a bit. And it leaves everyone sort of very confused, and there’s going to be a huge shift in the next episode that really changes things for everyone.”

Could the big change possibly have to do with this scandalous picture of Elena dancing with Stefan in episode 13, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”?
