“Vampire Diaries” fans better get ready for another flashback when the hit CW series returns in 2014. Recently, viewers have visited New Orleans during World War II, Whitmore College during the 60s, and New York City during the 70s. But this time the show is switching things up and taking us to another country -- somewhere between the 1400s and 1500s.

So, who are we going to get to see in the latest “Vampire Diaries” flashback? None other than Katherine Pierce and a very young Nadia!

A photo circulating on Twitter shows Nina Dobrev as Katherine posing alongside actress Ashlyn Jade Lopez. Spoiler TV reports that the young actress will be playing a child version of Nadia Petrova (played by Olga Fonda).

Viewers will remember that Katherine’s daughter, Nadia, was introduced in season 5. The fact that Katherine had a daughter out of wedlock at 16-years-old was known, but what fans didn’t realize is that her daughter eventually turned into a vampire to search for her mother.

In episode 5, “Monster’s Ball,” Nadia explained to her now-human mother that she’d been tailing her for more than 500 years. But Nadia initially didn’t tell her the truth. Instead she came up with a fake story that Nadia wanted revenge for Katherine killing her mother in Paris in 1645. Katherine realized the traveler was lying and drove a stake close to her heart to get the truth out of her. And Nadia did spill the truth -- that her mother was killed in a little cottage in England in 1492.

“You stuck her head in a noose and pushed her off a chair and snapped her neck,” she told Katherine. “My name is Nadia Petrova. You are my mother.”

Nadia was hurt that her mother had abandoned her as a child. But what she didn’t know was that Katherine had returned to Bulgaria for her daughter in 1498 when Nadia was 8-years-old. Having escaped Klaus, she searched “every village and every cottage” … but she couldn’t find Nadia.

Since the big reveal, the two haven’t had the best relationship -- Katherine killed Nadia’s traveler boyfriend, told her daughter to leave her alone and even tried to commit suicide.

But even with all the bad moments, Nadia was still bent on saving her mother from dying. With the cure slowly killing Katherine, Nadia came up with a plan to use traveler magic to put her mother in a new body. Katherine initially refused, telling her daughter that her new reason to stay alive was for a second chance with Stefan … and that Stefan’s pretty fond of the body she’s in. Nadia left her mother, hurt that she wouldn’t be a good enough reason for Katherine to want to fight for her life. However, Nadia couldn’t give up on her that easily and approached Matt about holding onto the magical traveler knife if Katherine changed her mind.

The midseason finale, episode 10, ended with Katherine calling Nadia about the traveler body switch magic … but collapsing from a heart attack.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns to the CW with episode 11 on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. EST. What would you like to see in the flashback between Katherine and Nadia? Let us know in the comments section or send a tweet to @AmandaTVScoop.
