“Vampire Diaries” fans were left with a major cliffhanger when Season 5 concluded. And based off of executive producer Julie Plec’s recent comments, it sounds like viewers will be staying in the dark a little while longer on the show’s biggest mystery – the “deaths” of Bonnie and Damon. However the loss of the two characters might lead to something truly mind-blowing in the upcoming sixth season.

“You’ll see enough of them to make you happy and more as it goes along,” Plec told E! Online of “dead” characters Bonnie and Damon. “They are by no means going to be off the air for six episodes. The mystery is where are they, what happened, are they dead, not dead, and what the hell are they going to do together, those two of all people?”

While Julie Plec’s comments on the two fan-favorite characters seem innocent enough, it sparked a pretty wild rumor – a potential relationship between Damon and Bonnie. But what’s driving the speculation? Plec’s wording: “What the hell are they going to do together, those two of all people?”

“Vampire Diaries” fans know that Bonnie and Damon have had a rocky friendship over the past couple of seasons. Damon has a tendency to murder or hurt those that Bonnie loves, but the former witch always ends up swooping in to help him when he gets himself in a sticky situation. Bonnie generally ends up aiding Damon because of Elena or because someone else’s life is in danger; but Damon too has come to Bonnie’s rescue when her life depended on it.

While the two had their differences, they cast it all aside when they were left on the crumbling “Other Side” during the Season 5 finale. Hand-in-hand, the pair walked towards the white light.

A romantic relationship between Bonnie and Damon might seem far-fetched for viewers of the hit CW show, however fans of “The Vampire Diaries” books will argue that it’s definitely a possibility.

In the books by L.J. Smith, Damon has strong secret feelings for Elena’s best friend, Bonnie. Romance between the two has not been a main focus, but instead hinted at through Damon’s internal struggles over feeling a connection to her. Damon has saved her life on multiple occasions and nursed her back to health. The two have even kissed before in the books … however Damon erased Bonnie’s memory directly after.

If Bonnie and Damon lost their memory, or are truly alone somewhere, it would be pretty believable for the two to develop a relationship.

Season 6 of “The Vampire Diaries” will begin four months after the heartbreaking loss of Bonnie and Damon. Plec told E! Online that the new season will center around the group “trying to find their way back to each other, trying to get back their grief, start over, move on and get their home back ultimately.” The premiere will kick off on Thursday, October 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
