Vampire Diaries 216 recap
Caroline (Candice Accola) tried out a new look and a new personality in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 2, episode 16. CW

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 6, episode 16 showed Caroline (Candice Accola) without her humanity, and it turns out she might be more fun that way. However, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) wanted Caroline to deal with the death of her mother. They had a plan to get her to turn her humanity back on -- but it completely backfired.

Caroline was nearly kicked out of a bar. She explained that she had put her dead mother in the ground four hours ago, and got some sympathy from the bartender, but she didn’t want sympathy.

“I’m just saying that my feet have been crammed in the world’s most uncomfortable heels all day, and your tequila seems to be the only thing that is helping,” Caroline said.

Caroline left the bar when she noticed a cute boy, one of Elena’s exes. She left the bar with Liam (Marco James) and fed on him.

Meanwhile, Elena and Stefan discovered Caroline had completely moved out of her mom’s house and her dorm. Before Elena could feel too abandoned, Bonnie (Kat Graham) showed up. Elena dropped her search for Caroline and popped open some champagne to celebrate Bonnie’s return.

Bonnie revealed that she hadn’t called Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) yet, and she wasn’t planning to. “I want to give him a chance at normalcy before we just drag him back into all of this,” Bonnie explained.

Elena wanted her to tell him right away, but Bonnie had some experience returning to the land of the living. “Coming back to life is complicated. Trust me, I’ve done it before,” Bonnie said.

Luckily, Elena didn’t have to feel guilty about abandoning her search for Caroline. The emotionless vampire returned to their dorm room. It seems Caroline was just starting from scratch. She wanted all new personal belongings. She didn’t even kill Liam. She healed him, compelled him and let him go.

Then Caroline proposed a deal to Elena: allow her to have a year without humanity and she won’t kill anyone. It was a simple deal that promised she wouldn’t be murderer but also forced her friends to leave her alone. “If anyone tries anything to flip my switch back -- and I mean anything -- I’ll become your worst nightmare,” Caroline threatened.

Stefan found out about a rave that Caroline was going to be at. He went with Bonnie and Elena to find her, but (aside from an unfortunate new hairstyle) Caroline seemed to be fine. She was dancing with a guy and having a great time.

With Caroline seemingly all right, Elena was ready to allow Caroline to go through with her year without humanity. Stefan wasn’t so willing. He felt responsible for her turn.

“She asked me one simple question, and all I had to do was tell her the truth and I didn’t. Now look me in the eye and tell me that I couldn’t have stopped this,” Stefan said.

So Stefan tried to tell Caroline how he really felt. “I don’t know when it became more than friendship but it did and it scared me so I pushed it away,” he explained.

He tried to tell her that he could be there for her if she just brought her emotions back. Caroline looked like she was feeling some emotions, but she didn’t flip her humanity switch back on. It was too little, too late, so she went to find Liam.

Meanwhile, Bonnie was uncomfortable at the rave after she and Elena split up. A guy pulled her onto the dance floor and kept trying to pull her closer. She tried to push him off, but the guy kept pulling her against his body. “Can’t help it,” he said. “You’re hot.”

The witch burned his hand with her powers. “Can’t help it,” she explained. “I’m hot.”

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) couldn’t be bothered with his brother’s mission when he had to find out what happened to his mother. Bonnie’s video from her trip to the prison world showed his mother. Kai (Chris Wood) said that she could easily be alive in a prison world, but Damon didn’t accept that.

His mother died of consumption (now called tuberculosis) in 1858. If she were stuck in 1903, she should’ve been an old woman. Of course, she wouldn't age as a vampire, but Damon said she couldn’t be a vampire. She had to be dead. Yet when he dug up her grave and opened her coffin, her body was gone.

Kai revealed that he could put Damon in the 1903 prison world, but he would need a favor. His new feelings from the merge made him want to make amends with Bonnie. “I need to see her. I need to apologize,” Kai said.

Damon called the witch during the rave, and Bonnie was relieved to talk to her old prison world buddy. However, Bonnie didn’t even want to hear Kai’s name, so Damon couldn’t ask her to talk to him.

As usual, Kai wasn’t willing to take no for an answer. He revealed that Damon’s mother was captured on a dock in New York City in 1903. She had just came in from Europe, but Kai wouldn’t tell Damon anything else. He needed Damon to come through on his end of the deal, so Damon had to trick Bonnie. He brought Kai to the rave.

“I wanted to apologize for anything I did that hurt you,” Kai said to Bonnie.

“If I see your face again, I will melt it off,” Bonnie said.

Back at the dorms, Bonnie flipped out on Damon. She used her powers to inflict the same pain on Damon that Kai had inflicted on her. She had him feel the pain of being stabbed and strangled and drugged. She said the only thing she couldn’t figure out how to make him feel was how lonely she was when she was stranded. Then she kicked him out.

Now that Kai had the opportunity to apologize to Bonnie, he was supposed to find a way to get Damon to the prison world. However, Kai refused to do so. After some research, he discovered that there are only two prison worlds that exist: the one Bonnie and Damon had been stuck in accidentally and one created for Damon’s mother. Damon was about to rip Kai's throat out until he explained himself.

“Your mom’s a ripper! Okay? She’s a ripper,” Kai said. “She turned in 1858, faked her death, went to Europe, where she went a little nuts. … They think 3,000 [deaths] in total.”

His coven had to lock her up. When they found her in the harbor in New York, she had already killed an entire ship full of people.

Damon couldn’t talk to someone important from his past, but Bonnie could. She finally called Jeremy but only got his voicemail. She said she needed more time to figure herself out before they saw each other. “I don’t know if I’m scared of myself or if I actually like the new me,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) revealed to Sarah (Tristan Mays) that he was a vampire, but she wasn’t that impressed. “I know what they are, I just thought there’d be more to it,” Sarah said.

Caroline interrupted them, but luckily for Enzo, she didn’t really care. She was simply inviting him to a warehouse party. At the party, Caroline realized that Stefan compelled Sarah to not care about anything related to vampires. After she gave Enzo that little piece of info, she tried to hit on him. He didn’t want to hook up Caroline without emotions. However, Caroline was actually just lifting his phone. She wanted Sarah’s number.

The blonde called Stefan from Enzo’s phone and revealed that she got in touch with Sarah using Enzo's cell. Stefan asked why she was meeting his secret niece. “As a matter of fact, I’m going to kill her,” Caroline said.

Liam was locked up with Sarah, and Caroline compelled him to do some surgery on Stefan’s niece. She ordered him to take Sarah’s spleen out, and then she upped the ante and ordered her heart to be taken out.

“If Stefan wants to save Sarah’s life, all he has to do is shut his humanity off,” Caroline said.

Liam revealed where he was and Elena went after him. Stefan and Caroline fought, but she staked him in his lower back. He couldn’t put up a good fight while injured, and Elena couldn’t find Sarah and Liam. She called Caroline, but Caroline refused to give away their location.

“Just remember to bring me back,” Stefan said to Elena.

“Stefan, no!” Elena shouted on the phone.

Elena finally found Sarah before Liam killed her, and she gave Stefan's nieve blood to heal the wounds Liam already inflicted. He was still trying to take out her heart, so Elena broke his hands. With the day seemingly saved, Elena called Stefan, hoping it wasn’t too late.

“Stefan don’t you dare tell me that you shut it off,” Elena said.

“Ok, I won’t,” Stefan said as he sipped his margarita. He handed the phone to Caroline.

“He shut it off,” Caroline said.
