TV Guide has a special Comic-Con 2014 issue featuring "The Vampire Diaries." TV Guide

Break out those tissues, “Vampire Diaries” fans. TV Guide has released their special “TVD” magazine cover for Comic-Con 2014 -- and it seems to hint that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be remaining a ghost in Season 6.

For those that don’t remember, the Season 5 finale concluded with Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev) blowing up the Mystic Grill to kill Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) and the Travelers. The plan was to use Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) to return to the living. However things didn’t go as planned. While Elena was able to pass through Bonnie and return as a vampire, Damon didn’t make it in time. Thanks to Luke (Chris Brochu), Liv ended up cutting off her magical connection to Bonnie and left the eldest Salvatore dead on the crumbling Other Side.

Needless to say, Elena was completely heartbroken over losing Damon. Fortunately he was able to say an emotional goodbye to his one true love (even though she couldn’t hear it) before he and Bonnie walked hand-in-hand toward the white light.

“Vampire Diaries” viewers already know that Damon and Bonnie are series regulars in Season 6, and will therefore be returning in some form or another. However the details on how they’ll appear remain a mystery for now.

TV Guide’s special Comic-Con issue features the “Holy Trio” -- Damon, Elena and Stefan (Paul Wesley). While Somerhalder, Dobrev and Wesley’s appearance on the cover of the magazine is nothing new, this 2014 issue features an interesting twist. Stefan can be seen clearly on the right side of Elena, but Damon appears to be transparent. A glow almost consumes the eldest Salvatore and his hand can be seen trying to touch Elena … however his hand is translucent like a ghost.

“Did they find peace?” executive producer Julie Plec teased the Hollywood Reporter after the Season 5 finale. “Are we going to be left with Damon and [Bonnie] flashbacks, hallucinations and memories for the entirety of Season 6? Did they find their way somewhere else, and if so, where? I can tell you that the Other Side no longer exists, so they’re not there. There’s no coming back from that.”

“Vampire Diaries” fans have their own crazy theories. But based on TV Guide’s magazine cover, we’re coming to the conclusion that things are not looking too hot for a Damon and Elena reunion.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW for its sixth season on October 2. What are your thoughts on Damon and Bonnie’s part in Season 6? Check out our theories HERE and HERE. Tweet your ideas to @AmandaTVScoop.
