Vampire Diaries
Liv (Penelope Mitchell) will be fighting for her life as her 22nd birthday approaches in Season 6, episode 12 of "The Vampire Diaries." CW

Get ready for the waterworks, “Vampire Diaries” fans. The hit CW series returned Thursday night with its emotional midseason premiere, and unfortunately the heartache is only going to continue moving forward.

Season 6, episode 12, titled “Prayer for the Dying,” will find Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) fighting for their lives as their 22nd birthday approaches. The twins finally came to an agreement in episode 11 that they would let Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) take their place in the merge with Kai (Chris Wood) … but their dad is not so keen on the idea. With Kai set to gain a dangerous amount of power if he wins, their father is not willing to put the Gemini witch coven at stake.

Fortunately for Liv, Tyler (Michael Trevino) is willing to fight for her. The synopsis teases that Tyler will “urge Liv to let him talk to her father.” Will Tyler be able to change his mind? Or is it a lost cause? We’re leaning towards lost cause. The episode description continues that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will engage in a risky plan that will spiral out of control … “forcing one of the twins to take matters into their own hands.”

Of course that’s not the only drama set to go down in episode 12. Jo will have to put her magic training on the backburner when Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) takes a turn for the worst. But Sheriff Forbes’ health scare might not be related to her stage 4 brain tumor. Caroline (Candice Accola) gave her mom vampire blood thinking it would cure her – however “Vampire Diaries” viewers discovered in the final moments of the midseason premiere that it would do actually do the opposite.

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 6, episode 12 will air on The CW on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. EST. Watch the promo video for “Prayer for the Dying” below:
