Stefan Vampire Diaries
Stefan (Paul Wesley) might not handle the news of his mother's survival very well in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6, episode 16. CW

Caroline (Candice Accola) won’t be the only one going through some major changes when “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6 returns. Stefan (Paul Wesley) will have to deal with the consequences of her choices.

In episode 15, Caroline decided she needed to turn off her humanity. She truly believes she won’t be a bloodthirsty vampire and kill everyone, but she might be proved wrong. While she won’t feel bad if her plan goes differently, Stefan will feel very guilty and he’ll have to make some tough decisions.

“I think he's going to hold himself very responsible. … He's definitely going to be carrying that burden with him, very determined to do anything he can to get her back on track,” executive producer Julie Plec told the Hollywood Reporter.

Ian Somerhalder, who directed episode 16, said Stefan will have to make some difficult choices. “Stefan makes a very, very tough decision that changes everything for him for quite a while,” Ian Somerhalder told Entertainment Weekly.

This wouldn’t be the first time Stefan has had to convince a vampire he loves to flip her humanity switch back on. However, this might end a little differently than when he wanted Elena (Nina Dobrev) to embrace her emotions. When asked if Stefan would shut off his own humanity, Somerhalder hinted at a big change. “Stefan goes through a pretty intense transformation,” Somerhalder said.

How would Stefan turn his emotions off while trying to help Caroline? Typically, it takes a pretty traumatic event to make a vampire consider turning off all human feelings. Well, he might not be able to focus on Caroline for long. Bonnie (Kat Graham) revealed to Damon (Somerhalder) his and Stefan’s mother was still alive but trapped in a prison world. It seems Damon won’t be in a rush to tell Stefan.

“Damon has to ask himself, what do I need to learn about this person before I tell my poor little brother that he has mourned her since he was 10 that she might be an evil, evil person trapped in bad places,” Plec said. “He's got a bit of a struggle at the top of the next episode trying to figure that out.” If Stefan really is considering losing his humanity, it might be because of his mother’s return.
