“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 might get kind of awkward. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline’s (Candice King) romance could result in some cute and embarrassing moments, but it’s Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) relationship that’s about to get cringe-worthy. A new sneak peek from the Season 7 premiere shows Damon joking about Bonnie’s death.

In the sneak-peek video, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) are drinking in Europe. They have no idea what they’re consuming because they can’t read the language on the labels. After trying to decipher what language it is, Damon says, “Oh, wait, where are we?”

Bonnie helpfully tells them that they’re in Amsterdam. She is completely sober and writing in her journal for when Elena (Nina Dobrev) wakes up. “Dear Elena, yup, halfway across Europe and they’re still drunk,” Bonnie says as she writes.

She reminds them that Elena asked her to keep a journal. Elena is in a coma until Bonnie dies, but the journals will fill her in on what she missed. “When she wakes up in 60-some years and finds out that Rick died from alcohol poisoning, she’s gonna want to know what happened,” Bonnie remarks.

“Unless you tragically choke to death on those cocktail peanuts, and then I can tell her myself,” Damon smiles. That isn’t the end of Damon’s jokes. He tells her to ride a bike without a helmet and to ride on the train tracks. Bonnie smiles, but she definitely isn’t feeling the love.

Executive producer Julie Plec previously warned that there would be some bitterness between Bonnie and Damon in Season 7. After all, it’s Bonnie’s life that is keeping Elena unconscious.

“Now, they still have that but there’s this underlying resentment on both sides,” Plec told Fanbolt in July. “For Damon, he’s like making jokes about like ‘Oh Bonnie you’d better chew that sandwich well, because I’d hate for you to choke and die! I don’t know the Heimlich Maneuver.’ And she’s saddled with the guilt of feeling like ‘I’ve got my life, my friend doesn’t have hers and this asshole is making jokes about me choking on a chicken bone.’ They’re going to have to work their stuff out if their friendship is going to stay on track, they need to really work that out.”

Dobrev confirmed that she won’t return this season, so Bonnie and Damon will have to fix their issues on their own.

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 premieres Thursday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
